How Lol Team Builder works
Written and maintained by Hompy ยท Updated
Lol Team Builder compares champions as parts of a five-role composition. It combines role validity, the selected team plan and visible structural needs to produce a planning shortlist rather than a prediction.
Start with role-valid choices
Each position is evaluated within its intended role. Existing selections remain fixed while open positions receive candidates that can realistically cover them. This prevents a high-level composition need from overriding basic role validity.
Professional match information contributes to the eligible pool and comparison signal, but popularity alone does not decide the result. The remaining five-role structure still matters.
Read team responsibilities together
The analysis considers physical and magical damage, sustained damage, frontline, engage, crowd control, peel, disengage, waveclear, side-lane pressure and power curve. These are connected responsibilities rather than independent targets to maximize.
For example, reliable engage needs follow-up damage, while a durable frontline still needs enough control to protect useful space. A recommendation can move up when it covers an important missing responsibility without repeating strengths the team already has.
Use Team Identity as context
Team Identity describes how a composition wants to create pressure or exchange space in fights. Poke values range, wave control and disengage; Protect Carry emphasizes sustained damage and layered protection; Dive needs coordinated access and follow-up.
The same champion can contribute differently across team plans. Identity therefore changes the comparison context without removing role requirements or guaranteeing that one archetype is stronger than another.
Understand what a score means
Scores compare available options under the selected role, identity, power curve and current team structure. They organize alternatives; they are not win probabilities and should not be compared as universal champion ratings.
A higher-scoring option may still be wrong for a specific lane matchup or player. Use explanations and composition signals to understand the trade-off before making the final choice.
Limits of the analysis
Patch balance, lane matchups, champion familiarity, execution, communication and opponent selections can outweigh structural advantages. The tool does not predict draft order, player skill or the exact way a match will be played.
Lol Team Builder is best used as a planning assistant: identify missing responsibilities, compare role-valid options and then verify the final pick against current game conditions.
